FC01: It's Your Fault! - The San Andreas Fault Up Close - SOLD OUT

Welcome to the San Andreas fault! Where else in the world can you put one foot on the Pacific tectonic plate and the other foot on the North American plate?

During this field course you will explore several truly remarkable features created by the San Andreas fault from the San Gabriel mountains to Palm Springs. While on the bus and during the stops you will participate in several standards-based activities which can be immediately taken back to the classroom. Throughout the day there will be an emphasis on how principles such as Steno's laws (e.g. superposition), the rock cycle, geologic time, and plate tectonics can be used as powerful tools to understand earthquakes. You will learn about current research in earthquake science, how STEM fields contribute to understanding earthquakes, and the Great California ShakeOut. Lunch provided. Ticket: SOLD OUT

Join CSTA for the annual meeting of members! CSTA President, Laura Henriques will deliver an update on the state of the association and the state of science education in California. Following Laura's address will be the keynote presentation by Dr. Stephen Pruitt. Dr. Pruitt is the Vice President for Content, Research, and Development for Achieve and led the development of the Next Generation of Science Standards.

Shark Tracking Robots

Making waves in how we research shark behavior. In an effort to track shark motion, Dr. Lowe and his colleagues have developed a shark tracking robot to monitor and track shark movements. The development of the robot requires input from a team of partners - engineers, programmers and mathematicians. Getting a diverse group of experts to share a common language starts with mathematics, the truly common language of all STEM fields. FINESSE #2 Promoting Inquiry: Backward Faded Scaffolding

Participants will engage in two complete sets of activities designed to demonstrate effective strategies for engaging students in authentic inquiry. Topics will include exploring the models Galileo used to develop his heliocentric theory of the structure of the solar system. The second activity will investigate weather, climate, and the techniques teacher can use to engage their students in identifying and investigating real world problems. Backward Faded Scaffolding (BFS), a strategy that teachers can use to engage their students in authentic, data driven, investigations of natural phenomena will be the instructional format for both sets of lessons. Participants will receive a collection of nine additional activities written in the BFS format.

This field course will provide a behind the scenes tour of the engineering processes that drive the worlds largest rotating aerial tramway. The tram gains 5,873 feet of elevation in twelve minutes and passes through 5 different biomes on it way to the top of Mt. San Jacinto. After the engineering tour, the participants will have the option of investigating rocks and minerals, bird watching, or learning different methods of determining the age of trees. Lunch provided. Given the innately captivating nature of astronomy – alien planet landscapes, exploding stars, black holes hidden within galaxies, and speeding space probes – teachers are often surprised at how challenging it is to convert astronomy from a lecture-dominated descriptive class to a scientific inquiry-oriented one as called for in the NGSS. Fortunately, recent advances in cognitive science offer new pathways for teaching astronomy through inquiry. Dr. Slater will illustrate how a scaffolding approach dramatically enhances students’ ability to do scientific inquiry in astronomy and improve their conceptual understanding of science.

FINESSE #4 Re-Designing Your Curriculum Using NGSS and “Understanding by Design”

In this capstone workshop, participants will explore the NGSS both for content (DCI) and Science and Engineering Practices as the guiding principals for redesigning their existing curriculum. Participants will collaborate on revisions to traditional activities and instruction, and develop their own activities to meet the Performance Expectations described in the NGSS. Particular emphasis will be placed on developing instructional strategies that address the specific learning needs of students who have traditionally been underserved by the current instructional landscape.
